Frequently Asked Questions

How long is treatment?

The length of treatment depends on each person and their individual goals. While comprehensive orthodontic treatment usually takes about 18-24 months, this varies on the complexity of the correction.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign?

We offer one-on-one consultations to determine if you qualify for Invisalign treatment! During your consult, we’ll perform a comprehensive analysis that considers your tooth alignment, bite coordination, and periodontal health. For many people, Invisalign is a great option to correct their teeth and improve their bite.

What foods should I avoid?

Try to avoid hard, sticky foods, like nuts or gummy candy. Foods like apples should be sliced, rather than biting right into them. Most foods are fine, as long as they’re not too hard or chewy!

Are braces painful?

At Oakland Orthodontics, getting braces is simple, easy, and painless. While there will be some initial tenderness, the discomfort typically disappears within just a few days. This soreness is a sign that your teeth are aligning and moving to the right position!

How much does Orthodontic Treatment cost?

The cost of treatment varies on the complexity and length of your individual care. Once we do an in-depth analysis, we’ll also give you a transparent review of the cost of your treatment. Honest care means everything to our team, so we’ll always work with you to create a plan that fits your budget before moving forward with any treatment!

What is the ideal age to go to the orthodontist?

arrow icon

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children begin seeing an orthodontist at age 7. At this age, many early malocclusions, such as early underbite, crossbite, or severe crowding, can be caught and corrected to improve the health of their teeth. If everything is developing as it should, then most treatment starts once all their adult teeth have grown in, typically around age 12.

For adults, the best time to start is always now! Many times, the longer you wait to correct minor issues, even crowding, the harder it becomes to correct long term.

Are braces necessary or cosmetic?

Orthodontic treatment serves both esthetic and functional purposes. We’ll always prioritize making sure your overall dental alignment and bite is in its best position, while crafting a confident, beautiful smile you feel proud of!

Are there less visible options than braces?

Virtually unnoticeable and completely removable, Invisalign is a fantastic option for patients who want a discreet solution for their orthodontic treatment. During our initial consultation, we’ll review your goals and dental alignment in detail to learn if Invisalign is a good fit for you!
